Switzerland Travel Guide
Switzerland is the country you claim is exaggerated in photos — until you stand inside it and realise no photo comes close. The Alps are higher than you imagined, the lakes more blue than anything you've seen, and the mountain railways that cut through snow are among the greatest train journeys on earth.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (June – August)
Best for hiking and lakes. Cable cars running. Long days. The most expensive season.
Winter (December – March)
World-class skiing at Zermatt, Verbier, Davos. Snow and magical scenery — beautiful even if you don't ski.
Shoulder (April–May & September–October)
Nature waking or turning colour. Fewer crowds, more reasonable prices. Everything still open.
Key Destinations
Interlaken & Jungfraujoch2–3 days
Interlaken sits between two lakes in the heart of the Alps. The rack railway to Jungfraujoch (Europe's highest railway station, 3,454m) is one of Switzerland's signature experiences. White in every direction, clean thin air, clouds below you.
Lucerne1–2 days
The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), Lake Lucerne with Mount Pilatus and Rigi behind it. One of Europe's most beautiful cities — even if you've seen a thousand photos of it.
Zermatt & the Matterhorn2 days
A car-free village beneath the Matterhorn. One of the world's most recognisable peaks. World-class skiing, summer hiking, and a view on day one that you will never forget.
Zurich1–2 days
Switzerland's largest city. The old Altstadt, excellent museums, shopping on Bahnhofstrasse, and cafes along the Limmat river. Switzerland's main international gateway.
Geneva & Lake Geneva1 day
The magnificent lake, the Jet d'Eau fountain, the old town, and the ICRC Museum. Home to international organisations. Easy access to Chamonix in France for Mont Blanc views.

Practical Tips
Visa
Switzerland is Schengen (but not EU). A valid Schengen visa grants entry. Check your country's requirements.
Costs
Switzerland is Europe's most expensive country. Migros and Coop supermarkets are your budget allies. Tap water everywhere is excellent.
Money
Swiss franc (CHF). Some places accept euros but get shortchanged. Cards accepted almost everywhere.
Swiss Travel Pass
If you're staying more than 3 days, this pass pays for itself. Calculate your routes before buying.
Weather
Alpine weather changes fast. Layer up. Even in summer, always carry a warm layer above 1,500m.
Jungfraujoch
Book the rack railway early — it's expensive but 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass. Go on a clear day — check the webcam before you go.
