Iceland Travel Guide
Iceland looks like nowhere else on earth. Glaciers and volcanoes share the same landscape, the Northern Lights paint the winter sky green, and in summer the sun never sets. Rent a car, take the Ring Road, and let this extraordinary island do the rest.
Best Time to Visit
Winter (December – February)
Best chance for Northern Lights. Days are short but nights are magical. Snowy F-roads — rent a 4x4 if you're venturing inland.
Summer (June – August)
Midnight sun — daylight until midnight. Best for hiking, all attractions accessible. Most expensive season.
Shoulder (September & October)
Best of both: aurora chances return + still warm enough for hiking. Prices slightly lower than summer.
Key Destinations
Reykjavík1–2 days
Europe's smallest capital. Hallgrímskirkja church, cosy cafes, interesting museums, and excellent seafood. A good base for exploring the whole island.
Golden Circle1 day (from Reykjavík)
Three classic sights: Geysir (spouting hot spring), Gullfoss waterfall, and Þingvellir National Park. Iceland's best single-day trip.
South Coast2 days
Seljalandsfoss (walk behind it), Skógafoss, the black sand beach at Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and Diamond Beach.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula1 day
The peninsula Jules Verne used as inspiration for Journey to the Centre of the Earth. A volcano, a lonely church in the lava fields, and moody cloud-covered landscapes.
Blue LagoonHalf day
The world's most famous geothermal spa. Turquoise water, steam, and free silica mud masks. Book well in advance — it sells out.
Getting Around
Rental Car
The only real way to explore Iceland. The Ring Road (Route 1) circles the whole island. In winter, rent an SUV or 4x4 — non-negotiable.
Public Bus
Strætó bus network operates in Reykjavík. Intercity buses exist but are limited — for freedom, rent a car.
Domestic Flights
Eagle Air connects Reykjavík to remote areas like the Westfjords — worth considering for multi-day detours.

Practical Tips
Weather
"If you don't like the weather in Iceland, wait 5 minutes." Layer up, always carry windproof and waterproof layers — even in summer.
Northern Lights
You need darkness to see them — get far from city light. Download the Aurora Forecast app. Be patient; clouds often obscure them.
Money
Icelandic króna. Cards are accepted absolutely everywhere — Iceland is one of the most cashless countries in the world.
Driving
F-Roads (highland roads) are 4x4 only — do not attempt in a regular car. River crossings exist — drive slow and with caution.
Food
Expensive. The Bonus supermarket is the cheapest. Try smoked fish and traditional lamb soup (Kjötsúpa) for budget meals with local flavour.
Internet
Mobile coverage is good on the main roads. Remote areas have no signal — download offline maps before heading out.
